https://www.npr.org/2021/01/13/956574947/california-to-vaccinate-residents-65-or-older-against-covid-19In response to a variety of factors, California is turning up the heat on the vaccination effort, and as of right now the vaccine is available to ANYONE AGE 65 OR OLDER (in addition to those already eligible)
If you have parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, roommates, or coworkers who are 65 or older, make sure they know that they can sign up for an appointment to get vaccinated right now. Encourage them to do it, encourage others to remind them about it, talk to them about it as a family, offer to call and make the appointment for them, do whatever you need to do.
The vaccine comes as two doses 21 days apart and the robustness of the immune response builds up over time, and once it does, it stops new infections from taking root (it doesn't nullify existing infections), so it will likely be at least 6 weeks between when widespread vaccinations begin and when the needle starts to move on hospital overloading, which is why it's important to push to make this happen as soon as possible.
Also, this has been available for a while but as a reminder, there is a contact tracing app which can alert you if you spend time with someone who later tests positive. You can get it here:
